doctoral student at UCLA
dissertation
I am a doctoral student studying the history of science, technology and medicine in the Department of History at UCLA. I consider scientific investigations of the role of genetics in behavior from the 1950s to 1980s. My dissertation research is on new imaging techniques in cytogenetics and genetic approaches to hereditary diseases and psychology. I concentrate on the new methods emerging in genetic counseling with respect to mental health, specifically intelligence. Ethical, social and legal concerns that arose decades ago continue today with reproductive technologies, genome wide association studies and direct-to-consumer genomics. I am currently investigating is the history of postnatal screenings on children with sex chromosome anomalies in Denver and surrounding areas as well as the follow-up psychosocial research (1960-2000). Similar studies were conducted around the world. Concepts of disease and ab/normal behavior are addressed.

Winter 2010: Political Economy of Latin American Underdevelopment, 1750 to 1930
This course provides an introductory survey of the social, political and economic history of postcolonial Latin America, a region which includes Mexico, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean. Focus is on the formation of independent nation states and political regimes, and the quest for sovereignty and its challenges in the shadow of the United States. We will consider the political regimes in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the meaning of national autonomy, the causes and consequences of state terror, and the experience of revolution from the perspective of everyday life. A key focus will be U.S. policy towards Latin America, from the Monroe Doctrine through the Contra War in Central America and neoliberalism, as well as popular resistance to it.
